MUSIC #78: 16 TOP HITS 1975 (HINDI OST)

Here’s a collection of 16 hot songs from the early to mid 1970’s compiled by Polydor Records. One thing I did notice about this compilation is that Kishore Kumar is the only male singer featured. I wonder why? Any ideas from you out there?

BTW, I love the picture of Shoma Anand (from the movie Barood) on the cover. This is also the picture featured on fellow blog mate’s site, Music From the Third Floor.

My verdict: 5 star compilation

Isn't it ever, Avdi? I could not find a common theme to link the songs.

Yes PC....I was wondering about that art work too...

Thanks Veen.

As for there being not a single Rafi song, Polydor started business in India in 1970 and in 5 years, their repertoire was not much. Also, Kishore was on top since Aradhana in 1969 and was more saleable. Only 3 movies in the collection had Rafi songs - The Train, Gambler and Mera Gaon Mera Desh. Polydor was competing with HMV, the monopolist till
1970, and must have considered all these facts while selecting the compilation.

This is only my guess and I am no authority on marketing.

Technically, Polydor's releases were superior to HMV's and most of their LPs were in stereo, a novelty for Hindi music those days.

Sorry, Sacha Jhuta did have a fantastic Rafi-Lata duet.

Not sure of Toofan

Thanks for sharing. I agree with Babu on the lack of Rafi on Polydor. I think HMV were very upset about these 'new kids on the block' (Polydor) & held tightly onto their artists like Rafi.

It would take the might of Gulshan Kumar & his T-Series cassettes to really shake up the Indian music industry in the 1980's.

This compilation also reminds me a bit of the 'Top of the Pops' albums you used to get in the early '70's back in England.

They would have eye-catching covers & all the hits of the day, all at a very reasonable price.

The only downside was that they were not the original singers but cover artists. Not sure how true this is, but there were rumours that a certain Elton John started his career on playing/singing on these.

Ah Babu Saab, what a wealth of information you are! Thank you.

Hi AJ, welcome back. It's been a while. Yes, very top of the pops. Maybe that was the intent of the releases. I have since found a few more Hindi Polydor compilation records (most of my Polydors are James Last and what nots) and will be posting them soon too.

I am a big fan of Rajkamal - Sawan Ko Aane Do OST [1979 EMI]. Do you know any other scores by this composer?
