MUSIC #76: SILSILA 1981 (HINDI OST)

A Yash Chopra classic starring superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan nee Bhaduri and Shashi Kapoor in a guest appearance. Silsila (Chains) tells the story of lovers’ lost and found, family obligations before self, and the taboo subject of adultery. Rumours have it that the very subject that was addressed in the movie was being played out in real life between actors Amitabh Bachchan and his on screen lover/adulteress Rekha.

The music is by Shiv-Hari (Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia) with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, Rajinder Krishnan, Hassan Kamal and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan (the father of actor Amitabh Bachchan).

Both movie and songs were the rage of the early 1980s and are still well remembered among the masses to date especially “Rang Barse”. The soundtrack also sees Amitabh Bachchan singing most of his own songs in the movie. My favourites include “Dekha Ek Khwab” (there is only one part of this song on the album – why it is listed as Part 1 eludes me), “Neela Aasman So Gaya” and “Rang Barse”. I am disappointed that the song “Neeche Paan Ki Dukkan” sung by Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor was not included in the album....I thought that was an awesome rendition by both the stars! If anyone has this, please do share it with me!

My verdict: 5 stars

NB: The Shiv-Hari collaboration has also been responsible for other great music albums of the 1980s and 1990s such as Chandni, Darr, Lamhe, Faasle, Vijay and Sahibaan.

MUSIC #35: PREETAM 1971 (HINDI EP OST)

One of Shammi Kapoor’s lesser known starrers but still with the trade mark music synonymous with his style and films. It also stars Leena Chandravakar, the beautiful Helen, Mehmood and a very young and handsome Vinod Khanna. I have been trying to find the LP for a long time but have never seem to come by one. Not sure how many songs are in the movie (been that long since I watched it) and for all I know, it may have only been released as an EP. Someone please let me know if this is the contrary.

The music from this movie is by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics by Rajinder Krishan and Hasrat Jaipuri. I can’t decide which songs I like the most; they are all so wonderful; although I am quite partial to Hum Bhi Shikari as Helen is just awesome in the song clip . I give it 4 stars +.

MUSIC #12: YEH RASTEY HAIN PYAR KE 1963 (HINDI OST)

Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke (This Path Of Love) is by composer Ravi and lyrics by Rajinder Krishan. I think this is one of Ravi’s finest works (in the classical 1960’s filmi style music) and I for one cannot fault this album. However, if you are looking for an album to bob to, this ain’t that. Most of the songs are sentimental in nature although ‘Jane Jaa Paas Aao Aao Na’ does have a slightly faster beat and some very amorous lyrics! ‘Tum Jis Pe Nazar Dalo’ is the only fast paced song in the album.

Ravi chose Asha Bhosle and Mohd Rafi to sing the whole OST – a wise choice as they both do credit to the music. I just love Mohd Rafi singing ‘Zulf Laharai Teri Aur Meri’....brings goosebumps to my skin....especially when he says, “Koi mujhse puchee, ke tum meri kya ho....mera pyar ki, ek haseen iltija ho....” (Someone ask me, who are you to me.....you are my love’s, most beautiful entreaty/desperate plea....). Sigh.....

I give this album 4 stars plus.
