Suraj (Sun, Sunshine) is a 1966 movie directed by T Prakash Rao and stars Rajendra Kumar, Vyjanthimala, Mumtaz and Ajit.

The movie boasts outstanding music by Shanker-Jaikishen (who won their 5th Filmfare award for best music director) and lyricists Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. Singer Mohammad Rafi won his 4th Filmfare best male playback singer for “Baharon Phool Barsao”, which in my opinion is one of Rafi’s best songs ever. My favourite in this OST is “Itna Hai Tumse Pyar” and of course, “Baharon Phool Barsao”. I give this album 5 stars.

Suraj is remembered only because of its songs and music. It is also remembered for excellent songs of Sharda who in turn is also remembered for the alleged rift between the musical duo SJ. Again, since TITLI UDI was a chart-buster, Filmfare created the Best Female Singer Award and bestowed it on Sharda. Rafi Sahaab was of course the winner of the Best Singer Award for his evergreen BAHAARON PHOOL BARSAAO.
On the flip side I may state that the best time for Sharda was the 21st Century where you have all kinds of playback singers in Bollywood. The Sixties were certainly not the time for her, with Lata and Asha ruling the roost. No one could stand against them and they had no need for any manipulations which they allegedly resorted to.

Great Album!

Seshadri saab, I agree with you on the English version of this song. Rafi also sang an English version of Hum Kaaley Hai to Kya Hai (Gumnaam) - but I am sure you are aware of this.

Nasir saab, Sharda later scored music for a few movies and I can offhand recall Maa, Behan Aur Biwi. The title song by Mukesh was a huge hit. A very obscure movie titled Kshitij also had music by her which had Kishore's (more obscure) "Andhe Safar Mein Hum Bhi Tum Bhi". Your mention of Sharda reminded me of these movies. Thought of sharing with you.

Seshadri, Babu and Nasir Saab, thank you for the wealth of information you have provided. Your insights beat any reference books, that is for sure.

You are welcome Bosun. Hi five mate, for Itna Hai Tumse. BTW, we should start posting together soon. Tell me when.

Oh I can't wait to download this when I get home this weekend...love this film, it's utterly delightful and the music is one of its biggest charms :)

I am glad to see Nasir sticking up for Sharda---I really love her songs, both the style of the music and her voice...but I know I am in the minority. Glad to not be completely alone though :D

@Anonymous: Yes MA BAHEN AUR BIWI is one of the well-known musical composition by Sharda. Especially so, since a Rafi Sahaab song (ACHCHHA HI HUWA DIL TOOT GAYA) was nominated for the 1969 Filmfare Award. There is a tandem song by Sharda too.

The following songs of Sharda are my favourites:

From Gumnam: AAYEGAA KAUN YAHAAN and a duet with Rafi: JAANE CHAMAN.

Street Singer: A duet with Rafi: JIGAR KA DARD ...
