MUSIC #11: HUMJOLI 1970 (HINDI OST)

Okay, it’s time to up the ante a bit. I have been posting too many soppy songs (and there’s nothing wrong with that, is there?) and I think some upbeat songs are now warranted. And for that, I have chosen Humjoli.

It is so hard to write about songs from Hindi movies without referencing the song clips from the movie. This is definitely the case with Humjoli. The dance scenes are so bizarre and OTT (in a nice way, mind you….but who in their right mind dances that way?!) that Farah Khan, the director of Om Shanti Om, referenced quite a bit of the song scenes and costumes from this movie in Om Shanti Om. For a really good review on the Humjoli movie, costumes and scenes, check out this awesome posting at Bollywood Deewana.

Back to the score. The music is by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. My favourite song from this movie is ‘Tik Tik Tik Mera Dil’ (and the movie clip is awesome too). However, I am surprised that Lata Mangeshkar is actually singing this song because it is the ‘type’ of song and music (slightly raucous) usually accredited to Asha Bhosle. And then, you have Asha singing the more mellow ‘Dhal Gaya Din’ and once again, Lata with the more upbeat ‘Haye Re Haye’. These songs for me is the trifecta of the album, although I don’t mind ‘Hu Tu Tu Tu’ and ‘Chal Shuru Hoja’. Also, in my opinion, this album belongs to the females. What do you think?

I give this OST 4 stars.

Waiting for the better bit rate versions!! Like what you are coming up with! Keep up the good job! And please upgrade the previous posts (ie better bit rate!)
Thanx in advance

Thanks Viz. Again, my kids have used up my internet allowance for the month, so I have to wait mid month before I can upload music with the new bit rates. In the meantime, I had a couple of albums previously uploaded, so I am using that.

Memsaab, my pleasure.

I can see the vinyl covers of Guide, Sharaabi, Prem Pujari, Sanam Teri Kasam, Mr. India, Waqt, Sharmilee, Leader on the pic!! Interesting line up........

Thanks Viz, I have around 160 hindi records (and growing) and 120 English records at the moment.

Most of the Hindi records are 1960's and 1970's, with a few 1950's and 1980's thrown in for good measure. I am planning to put up 'Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke'(1963) as my next posting. Any request for the proceeding upload???

Nice one - Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke is one of the finest efforts of Ravi. It is a Sunil Dutt production and was a very popular score in the 60's! Keep up the good work and dont forget to upgrade all your works in a better bit rate! I am a big fan of the vinyl rips primarily becoz these classics have not been given proper due in the digital era - on the CD's they have just burned the scores without any remastering. This is one reason I go back to the vinyl where even with all the clicks and the external noises, the songs are a delight to listen to!
Thanx for taking the trouble to ripp all your vinyls!

any idea on how to play rar files on windows vista, do i have to convert the rar at the end to mp3, i have no clue, your help will be appreciated

Thanks again Veen. Though not a great score by Laxmi Pyare's standards, anything ripped from a vinyl is a welcome change from the digital discs - like Viz says in his post. And, many more thanks for all the pending uploads. I know it takes lot of time and effort to rip and upload these classics. Its the passion like yours and PC's that keep these classics alive.

Warm Regds / Babu

Thanks Viz, it's the support and appreciation of people like you that make this so called chore effortless. To backup what you just said about the digital era, i recently bought a double Asha Bhosle cd (why I don't know) compiled by Saregama and the sound was awful! remember AM and SW radio? That's how it was. I was totally disgusted. My 50 year old records sound better.

Hi Bollywood Deewana...it is my pleasure....and thank you! I have quite a few records which movies you have reviewed, so expect more links. Hope you don't mind.

Now, I'll try to explain how to extract the RAR file. The viz, my daughter has gone to school so you've got me as the Masterni. Woo Ohhh!!!

A rar file is not a multimedia file, but rather a zip file that contain one or more compressed files. In my rar file, it is mp3 songs. You need to "extract" the mp3 files from the .rar archive and then play them as you would on windows media player or itunes.
First you need to buy or download the rar extractor. Do a google search on ‘free rar extrators’ or use this link I found: http://w-shadow.com/blog/2007/08/26/free-rar-extractor-list/

Then, download the music from my site and save it in your music folder. Open your music folder and find the rar file - the icon will look like a pile of books. Right click on the rar file and find a command that says or starts with ‘extract to ......’. A window will quickly open and ‘unzip’ the file. You don’t need to do anything at this stage. The unzip file will look the same as the other music files and will have the same name (but with an mp3 extension) as the rar file. Just click on the file and it will open with your default music software.

I hope this make sense. Or you can try this site for more info: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Play-RAR-Files&id=764296

Hi Babu,

As I wrote in response to Viz, it is the support and appreciation from people like you, BD,PC memsaab and the rest of the vinyl/movie lovers that makes this so pleasureable. Therefore, comments are so appreciated because this then means that there are people out there that appreciate the efforts fellow bloggers and I are putting in to keep the 'music' alive, so to say.

Thanks guys, you are great mates.

Great to see many (actually not so many) Blogs inspired by PC & MFTTF. Third Floors Quality of sound & overall presentation is just awesome. I hope you would be able to match upto standards like there.

Some requests / suggestions

1. I have downloaded 2 of your rips & they have some hissing noise & artifacts. It would be great if this can be taken care of.

2. Provide a bit more High Resolution CoverArt & a bit cleaned up & done professionally. It should be at least 700x700 or 900x900.

Hoping for a positive reply.

Thanks & keep it up.

Hi Music Fan

Thanks for your comments and to clarify a few matters you raised:

1. I am not in this (blogging)for the competition, with PC or with any other music/vinyl lover. I have my own style and my own music likes/dislikes. I am sorry if it is not up to certain reader's standards.

Also, I write about movies too. Having said that, I don't review every bit of the movie like some blogs do. Doesn't make mine better or worse, just different. I personally don't like spoiling the fun for the movie watches. But then some people want to know the punch line and therefore visit blogs that review the whole movie; each to its own, I say. But for me, it's like reading the last pages of a newly bought novel. That’s my opinion; it's neither right nor wrong.

2. Unlike some blogs, I do not edit, manipulate or insert different sound effects to my vinyl rips. What you hear is what you get. It is from the original record. If listeners want perfect quality music, I would suggest they either find sites that have digitally remastered music or purchase the CDs. In my opinion, the reason one listens to vinyl is because of the noises inherent only in vinyls! Having said that, an alternative is to edit the music themselves using music editing software such as Audacity - but that would be too much work, wouldn’t it??? ;)

3. I note your comment on the pictures. However, I do not have the time to airbrush or Photoshop my pictures. Again, what you see on my site are the original pictures without airbrushing. Having said that, I will endeavour to take better pictures. You are most welcome however to 'professionally' airbrush the pictures if you so desire.

Cheers, Veen.

Maybe it's only me, but I find it kind of impertinent when one is offered great music for free to be (essentially) replying "nice, but you should do a better job of it ". Just sayin'.

You're doing great as is Veen!

Veen said...

My dear PC,

Thank you so much for your comment and support.

As in every situation, there's is always a fine line that would tip the scales. In this instance, constructive borderlining on the impertinance.....as you so correctly stated!

Humjoli was a popular movie since it had Mehmood. (People used to go to watch him and not the movie. Such was his clout).
My favourite is: DHAL GAYAA DIN...I especially like the style of Rafi Sahaab when he voices the desparation of parting: ABHI ABHI TOH AAYI HO...
All the songs were hit. Jeetendra was in ascendence. Leena looked beautiful as usual.
