MUSIC #92: CHORI CHORI 1956 (HINDI OST)

Chori Chori (Secretly), released in 1956, was directed by Anant Thakur and stared the great combo of the era, Raj Kapoor and Nargis Dutt. The movie is said to be inspired by the Hollywood movie “It Happened One Night” and would later inspire another Bollywood movie,” Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin” which starred Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt.

The music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan (SJ), who won the Filmfare Best Music Director for the soundtrack. The lyrics were a joint effort between lyricists Harat jaipuri and Shailendra, both achieving hits with their songs Aaja Sanam and Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi, respectively (which happens to be my favourite too). In my opinion, SJ’s decision to have Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar sing most of the mellow tracks in the movie was an excellent choice. Manna Dey just brought the music and the lyrics to life. The more upbeat tunes from the movie were sung by Mohammad Rafi.

I give this album 5 stars.

Suraj (Sun, Sunshine) is a 1966 movie directed by T Prakash Rao and stars Rajendra Kumar, Vyjanthimala, Mumtaz and Ajit.

The movie boasts outstanding music by Shanker-Jaikishen (who won their 5th Filmfare award for best music director) and lyricists Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. Singer Mohammad Rafi won his 4th Filmfare best male playback singer for “Baharon Phool Barsao”, which in my opinion is one of Rafi’s best songs ever. My favourite in this OST is “Itna Hai Tumse Pyar” and of course, “Baharon Phool Barsao”. I give this album 5 stars.

BTW, if you are feeling a sense of déjà vu with this posting....you are right. I stuffed up my numbering and short of redoing all the numbers in edit mode, I decided to re-post this album with the correct numbering. Yes the sequence is still in order; 'EVENS' for Hindi albums and 'ODDS' for everything else. So here is Pyar Mohabbat all over again....enjoy.

This OST has everything going for it – all the great singers of the 60’s – Rafi, Asha, Lata, Usha, Manna Dey and Sharda. It’s as if music directors Shankar-Jaikishan could not decide who to get so, they decided to get them all. I am surprised Kishore Kumar and Mukesh weren’t thrown in for good measure!!!

No wonder it’s one of my favourite albums of the decade, coupled with the fact that it is also a Dev Anand starrer, and not forgetting the very beautiful Saira Banu.

As mentioned, the music is by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. If I have to chose my favorites from this album, they would have to be Pyar Mohabbat Ke Siva, Mil Gai Mil Gai, Aap Naraz Khuda Khair Kare, Tere Siva and of course Tujh Ko Dekh Ke. My verdict: Five stars, no less!!!

Jane Anjane (Friends and Strangers) is a 1971 Bollywood movie directed by Shakti Samanta and stars Shammi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Leena Chandavarkar. You can catch a review of this film, posted simultaneously on BOLLYWOOD DEEWANA.

The soundtrack to Jane Anjane is composed by Shankar Jaikishan and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri, S. H. Bihari and Gulshan Bawra. This is one great album, with nearly all the singing heavy weights of Bollywood lending their voices to this soundtrack – Asha, Lata, Rafi, Kishore, Manna Dey and Sharda. There is bound to be something here for everyone.

I personally like Ram Kasam (Asha just shines here), Teri Neeli Neeli Ankhon Ki (one of Rafi-Lata best duets in my opinion), Jane Anjane Log Mile and Cham Cham Baje Re Payaliya. I give this album 4.5 stars

Jhuk Gaya Aasman (The sky has relented) is a 1968 movie starring Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu. It was directed by Lekh Tandon with music by Shankar Jaikishan, and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra and S.H Bihari (see the back of the LP cover for the listing)  . The film is a remake of the Hollywood film "Here comes Mr. Jordan (1941)". It performed "below average" at the box office but did rather well musically.

The most notable song from this movie would be "Kaun Hai Jo Sapnome" an outright copy of the song "Marguerita", an Elvis Presley song, from his movie "Fun In Acapulco" (see my posting HERE). It is one of my favs from this album, along with "Kahan Chal Diye" and "Unse Mila Nazar". I give this OST 3.5 stars.

MUSIC #58: JHUK GAYA AASMAN 1968 (HINDI OST)

I have always enjoyed the mughal-courtly set Urdu movies from Bollywood (or another phrase I have come across is ‘muslim social’ movies) and Mere Huzoor (My Lord) is one that comes under this genre.

The music of Mere Huzoor is by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri, and the movie stars Raaj Kumar (spoiler - does he ever get the girl in any of his movies?), the beautiful Mala Sinha (I did think she was rather too ‘old’ for Jeetendra though) and a very young and dashing Jeetendra.

With most of the music and movies in this genre, the lyrics and dialogues are just awesome, befiting the ‘tehzeeb’ or finesse of the culture, requiring the best of showmanship in its presentation. And it is therefore without any wonder that most of the songs sung in this album are by Mohd Rafi, whose mellifluousness voice just gives so much depth and meaning to the music and lyrics. But then, so do Lata, Asha and Manna, in their own right.

I give this album 5 stars, with my favorites being Mere Huzoor, App Ki Khatir, Woh Khushi Milli Hai and Gham Uthane Ko.

The movie Sanyasi (a man that renounces all worldly thoughts and desires, and spends the rest of his life in spiritual contemplation) is directed by Sohanlal Kanwar and stars Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini.

The music is by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics by Vishweshwar Sharma, Varma Malik, Vithal Bhai Patel, M.G. Hasmat, Hasrat Jaipuri and Indiwar. As the movie is themed around religious connotations, the songs in the movie are also very spiritual in nature….and may not be everone’s cup of tea. In my opinion, there are only a few notable songs in this OST, being Chal Sanyasi Mandir Men, Sham-e-Furqat Ka Dhal Gaya Saya, Choron Ka Maal Chor Kha Gaya and Kya Maar Sakegi Maut Use. If it wasn’t for Chal Sanyasi Mandir Men on Side One, I’d ask you to just listen to Side Two of the album.

My verdict: 2 stars + to 3 stars (but I give Chal Sanyasi Mandir Men and Sham-e-Furqat Ka Dhal Gaya Saya 4 stars). But don't let my opinion put you off from listening to this album.

One of Shammi Kapoor’s lesser known starrers but still with the trade mark music synonymous with his style and films. It also stars Leena Chandravakar, the beautiful Helen, Mehmood and a very young and handsome Vinod Khanna. I have been trying to find the LP for a long time but have never seem to come by one. Not sure how many songs are in the movie (been that long since I watched it) and for all I know, it may have only been released as an EP. Someone please let me know if this is the contrary.

The music from this movie is by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics by Rajinder Krishan and Hasrat Jaipuri. I can’t decide which songs I like the most; they are all so wonderful; although I am quite partial to Hum Bhi Shikari as Helen is just awesome in the song clip . I give it 4 stars +.

MUSIC #35: PREETAM 1971 (HINDI EP OST)

Brahmachari the movie was a box-office hit in 1968 and was nominated for eight Filmfare awards and won five of its nominations – Best Movie, Best Actor (Shammi Kapoor), Best Male Playback Singer (Mohammad Rafi for “Dilke Jharoke Mein"), Best Lyricist (Shailendra for "Main Gaon Tum") and Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan). The movie also won the 1969 Bengal Film Journalists' Association (the oldest film critic association in India, founded in 1937) awards (hindi section) for Best Supporting Actress (Mumtaz), Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan) and Best Editor (M.S.Shinde).

As mentioned above, the music for this soundtrack is by the talented Shankar-Jaikishan duo and the lyrics are from three different writers – Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri and Rajinder Krishan. All the songs are sung by the legendary Mohammad Rafi and only one song, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke”, is a duet. I have a soft spot for the music of this album, especially “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” as I choreographed and danced to this song for a Vesaikhi show back in the late 1980’s (see picture below). Also, actress Mumtaz made the watch look like a very sexy accessory in the song clip. Not only that, Shammi Kapoor, along with his brother Shashi Kapoor, are some of my favourite actors from that era. For a write-up of the movie, check out Memsaab Story.

My favourites from this album include “Main Gaon Tum So Jao”, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” and “Dil Ke Jharoke Men”. My verdict: 4 stars.

Brahmachari, from the word Brahmacharya, which is a period of (Hindu) spiritualism that one partakes, in which sexual abstinence is undertaken. A Brahmachari is the male term of Brahmacharya and brahmacharini is the female term. Unlike the practices of nuns and priest in Catholism where celibacy is required until death (or until one renounces his or her wows to God), the period for Brahmacharya may be ceased and never to be continued, or may be continued at a later time.

MUSIC #22: BRAHMACHARI 1968 (HINDI OST)

MUSIC #13: SANGAM 1964 (HINDI OST)

This is one of my favourite movies and album from the 1960’s and in my opinion, one of Shankar-Jaikishan’s better albums from that era. The music directors missed out on the 1965 Filmfare Awards for that album to the more classical music of Dosti (a winner in its own right) by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I will be posting this OST in the very near future. The lyrics in this album are by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra.

For me, the music of Sangam epitomises that bagpipes, accordions, violins and the balalaika (or is the bouzouki?) can be very ‘sexy’ music instruments and can actually work in pop music. Apart from the guitar, the violin was another instrument that I wished I had learnt. This is what I miss about the music of the present – the lack of full orchestral music in albums.

Now to the songs, and this is going to be hard as I love the whole album! But if I had to chose, my preferences (I could not pick one, sorry) would be ‘Dost Dost Na Raha’, ‘O Mere Sanam’ (I actually memorised the whole song in my teenage years when I found out that the ‘Anil Kapoor’ look-like in my hometown that I had a crush on, liked my best friend....sob....Drove my mum mad as I would keep rewinding the video to write the lyrics down!!!) and ‘I Love You’.

I know that ‘Dost Dost Na Raha’ is a sad song but when I do hear this song, it makes me break in a Viennese Waltz....pity none in my household would take me up on the offer to dance, except young Master G. And then there is the German song ‘I Love You’ which I could find no info on. If Shankar-Jaikishan did write the score for the music, they did a bloody good job in fusing Greek/Mediterranean style traditional music, with filmi music (the violin score) and German lyrics. What a combo!

I give this album 5 stars!

By now most of you would have realised that my choice of albums seem to be sentimental albums. Mind you, I like fast paced songs too but when I come home from a hard day’s work, I really like to unwind with slow paced songs. I tend to save most of the English pop, Hindi funk, cabaret or Punjabi ‘balle-balle’ music for the weekend. Also, my kids tend to complain if I play sentimental music during the weekend when they are home too. “Who died” is the usual comment I get. Cheeky brats!!! If only they knew the beautiful music and poetry that they are missing. Partly my fault – I should have spoken Punjabi to them from birth but it is so hard when one, I don’t speak Punjabi too well myself and two, when kids are brought up in a mixed culture household! My choice, so I have to live with it I guess.

Also, my favourite Hindi records appreciation blog, Music From The Third Floor, reviews lots of Hindi funk and cabaret albums. No point for duplication, I say (though I may still upload duplicate albums, with my own slant of the music). Make sure you check out this awesome site to get your fix of Bollywood music too.

Back to this album. The music is from Shankar Jaikishan and the lyrics are from Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri. It’s really hard for me to say which are my favourite song/s from this OST, for I think all the songs are quite melodious, especially for that vintage where most composers were trying to revolutionise the Hindi music industry with the new wave of music coming from the west. If I had to chose, my preferences would be the ‘Bol Meri Taqdeer Mein Kya Hai’ duet and ‘Allah Jane Kya Hoga Aage’. I think Mukesh and Lata just sizzle. What do you think? Oh, and I want to thrown in ‘Kho Gaya Hai Mera Pyar’ too. Only because I so love Mahendra Kapoor’s voice!!!

MUSIC #07: HARIYALI AUR RASTA 1962 (HINDI OST)

A favourite movie and album when I was really young, with “Re Mama Re Mama Re” from Mohd Rafi being the favourite song then, because of the catchy tune and funny lyrics. One normally does not associate Rafi with humour, the forte is usually afforded to Kishore Kumar and his trademark yodels. But Rafi does a good job here and if you were looking forward to some yodelling from the Hindi king yodeller, you will not be disappointed with “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai” by Kishore Kumar. BTW, I have also included the Mohd Rafi version of “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai” , which I copied from the movie, as it was not on the LP. I wonder why??? Let me know which version is your preference. In case you are wondering why the voices change halfway throughout this song, it is because the first part is sung by Mohd Rafi (who lends his voice to Shammi Kapoor in the movie) and the second part is sung by Kishore Kumar (for Rajesh Khanna’s role in the film). Oh, and let us not forget that there’s the third version too by Asha. Maybe this is why the second version was not included in the OST – for fear of “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai” overload!!!!

I have to admit though that my favourite songs from this album now are “Mujhe Pyas Aesi Pyas Lagi Hai” and “Dil Use Do”. As usual, both Asha and Rafi are at their best. So sit back and enjoy this pleasant album from composer Shankar Jaikishan and songwriter Hasrat Jaipuri.
