MUSIC #30: ANOKHI ADA 1948 (HINDI OST)

It is really hard to appreciate, let alone write about the older style music. Not that it isn’t good or anything to that effect…..it’s just different and most of the appreciation lies in the lyrics and the orchestral music. Also, I believe you have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate the music….it is a bit like listening to soul or jazz music…the mood and ambience have to be just right.

Having said that, I really do not mind Anokhi Ada, by composer Naushad; although it does not sit as high on my list as the other Naushad’s compositions of that particular era namely Mela, Deedar, Jaadoo and Dastaan. But do check out the dance music at the end of Side Two – simply awesome and in my opinion, ahead of its time. The lyrics in this album are by Shakeel Badayuni and Anjum Pilibhiti; and the singers are Mukesh (how different is his voice here, I nearly could not recognize it!), Umadevi, Surendra and Shamshad Begum. My favorites include “Bhool Gaye Kyon”, “Nazar Mil Gayi”, “Kabhi Dil Dil Se” and “Aaj Kahan Ja Ke”. Oh and the Dance Music, of course….I love the opening score with the OUD. The piece makes for great belly dancing music....LOL!

(from the Riyad and Bayad, Arabic tale)

My rating: 3 stars plus.

MUSIC #29: ROBERTA FLACK – QUIET FIRE 1971 (ENGLISH LP)

Roberta Flack was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina (USA) on 10 February 1937. Not only a singer, she is also a songwriter and a classical pianist (at 15, she won a full scholarship to study classical piano music at Howard University, making her one of the youngest students ever to enroll there). Roberta is notable for jazz, soul, folk, rhythm and blues (R&B) music; and is best known for her Hot 100 #1 singles "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song", "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You" (the last two songs were duets with Donny Hathaway). "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won the 1973 Grammy Record of the Year and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" won the same award at the 1974 Grammy Awards. She and U2 are the only two artists credited to win the award in back-to-back years. (Source: http://www.robertaflack.com/)

Quiet Fire is Roberta Flack's third album and was released in 1971. The album features Roberta's rendition of the 1960 Shirelles classic, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and the Paul Simon hit, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (which won the best album, best engineered recording, record of the year and best song of the year in 1970 for Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel). This is one of the better jazz/R&B albums and makes for very pleasurable listening. I love it.

My rating: Four stars +

MUSIC #28: MR INDIA 1987 (HINDI OST)

One of the few movies and soundtracks from the late 1980’s that I actually enjoy. The movie Mr India was directed by Shekhar Kapur, who also directed Bandit Queen (1994), Elizabeth (1998) and Four Feathers (2002). It stars the 80’s and 90’s heart-throb Anil Kapoor in the title role, with Sri Devi playing his love interest. It showcased Amrish Puri in one of the best villain roles in Bollywood cinema, as the international crime lord and terrorist, Mogambo.

The movie and songs were a hit in 1987 and remains a cult classic till this day with the line “Mugambo khush hua” (Mugambo is pleased) being one of the most frequently used quote from a Hindi movie. The music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Javed Akhtar was also a hit in that year. The album is still appreciated and remembered by the masses especially the song “Hava Havaii”, made famous by Sri Devi’s lip sync and kooky behaviour in that song and movie.

My favourites from the movie are “Kate Nahin” (another song that I memorised growing up) and “Hava Havaii” (see the YouTube clip below - Hilarious!).

My rating: 4 stars.

Mr India 1987: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Zindagi Ki Yehi Reet Hai (Happy) – Kishore Kumar and Chorus

2. Karte Hai Hum Pyar Mr India Se – Kishore Kumar and Kavita Krishnamurthy

3. Na Mange Sona Chandi…Footbal Wapas De – Shabir Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal and Chorus

4. Zindagi Ki Yehi Reet Hai (Sad) – Kishore Kumar and Chorus

Side Two

1. Hava Havaii – Kavita Krishnamurthy and Chorus

2. Zindagi Ki Yehi Reet Hai – Kavita Krishnamurthy and Chorus

3. Karte Hai Hum Pyar Mr India Se – Kishore Kumar and Kavita Krishnamurthy

4. Kate Nahin Kat-te….I Love You…I Love You – Kishore Kumar and Alisha Chinoy

PS: The record cover and record itself (on Side One Song 3) lists a fourth version of the song “Zindagi Ki Yehi Reet Hai”, sung by Mohd. Aziz and Chorus. Unfortunately, it is not on the record. Not sure why. Weird.

Trivia:

1. The name Mugambo was the name of the horse in the movie “Karan Arjun”. Ironically, Amrish Puri also played the villan (Thakur Durjan Singh) in the movie.

2. A sequel is currently being made – Mr India 2 which will see Sri Devi returning to the big screen since she gave up acting in 1997. Anil Kapoor (Sri Devi’s B-I-L) will also reprise the role of Mr India with Salman Khan playing the character Mugambo; his first ever negative role in his acting career. The movie is scheduled for release next year.

MUTTERINGS #14: INSTALLING LOVE....

Illustrated by Robert Elliott

In response to yesterday's posting, my dear web friend Babu sent me this. Thanks mate. The rest of you, I hope you enjoy this as much as I have. And don't forget to install love! It's what makes the world go round....

Veen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSTALLING LOVE
Tech Support: Yes Sir... how can I help you?
Customer: Well, after much consideration, I've decided to install Love. Can you guide me though the process?
Tech Support: Yes. I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?
Customer: Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready. What do I do first?
Tech Support: The first step is to open your Heart. Have you located your Heart Sir?
Customer: Yes, but there are several other programs running now. Is it okay to install Love while they are running?
Tech Support: What programs are running Sir?
Customer: Let's see, I have Past/Hurt, Low Self-Esteem, Grudge and Resentment running right now.
Tech Support: No problem, Love will gradually erase Past/Hurt from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longer disrupt other programs. Love will eventually override Low Self-Esteem with a module of it's own called High Self-Esteem. However, you have to completely turn off Grudge and Resentment. Those programs prevent Love from being properly installed. Can you turn those off Sir?
Customer: I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?
Tech Support: With pleasure. Go to your start menu and invoke Forgiveness. Do this as many times as necessary until Grudge and Resentment have completely erased.
Customer: Okay, done! Love has started installing itself. Is that normal?
Tech Support: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other Hearts in order to get the upgrades.
Customer: Oops! I have an error message already. It says, "Error - program not run on external components." What should I do?
Tech Support: Don't worry Sir. It means that the Love program is set up to run on Internal Hearts, but has not yet been run on your Heart. In non-technical terms, it simply means you have to Love yourself before you can Love others.
Customer: So, what should I do?
Tech Support: Can you pull down Self-Acceptance; then click on the following files: Forgive-Self; Realize Your Worth; and Acknowledge your Limitations.
Customer: Okay, done.
Tech Support: Now, copy them to the "My Heart" directory. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching faulty programming.
Also, you need to delete Verbose Self-Criticism from all directories and empty your Recycle Bin to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.
Customer: Got it. Hey!!! My heart is filling up with new files. Smile is playing on my monitor and Peace and Contentment are copying themselves all over My Heart. Is this normal?
Tech Support: Sometimes. For others it takes awhile, but eventually everything gets it at the proper time. So Love is installed and running.
One more thing before we hang up. Love is Freeware. Be sure to give it and its various modules to everyone you meet. They will in turn share it with others and return some cool modules back to you.
Customer: I promise to do just that. By the way, what's your name?
Tech Support: Just call me the Divine Cardiologist, also known as the Great Physician, or, just "I AM." Most people feel all they need is an annual checkup to stay heart-healthy; but, the manufacturer (ME) suggests a daily maintenance schedule for maximum Love efficiency.
MUTTERINGS #13: TECHNICAL PROBLEM!
Illustration by Robert Elliott
Dear Tech Support,
Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance — particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as ARL 5.0, AFL 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1.
Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.
What can I do?
Sincerely,
Desperate House Wife
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Desperate House Wife,

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System. Please enter the command: “I Thought You Loved Me.exe” and try to download Tears 6.2 and don’t forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the ensuing applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5

But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Food 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck.

Tech Support

MUSIC #27: KAALA PATTHAR 1979 (HINDI OST)

Kaala Patthar (Black Stone or Coal, in this instance) is an action/drama film produced and directed by Bollywood heavyweight Yash Chopra. The movie is based on the Chasnala mining disaster in 1975 where an explosion in the Indian mine led to the mine flooding, killing 372 miners in the catastrophe.

The movie however did average at the box office throughout India; it was the urban numbers that kept the movie from becoming a box office flop. Despite eight Filmfare nominations, it failed to win a single award.

The music however fared rather well with the masses. The scores are by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Sahir. The first song of the album, “Ek Raasta Hai Zindagi” opens with the first line of the famous Dolly Parton song, “Jolene” but this is where the similarity ends. No idea why Rajesh Roshan inserted that into the opening score; if anyone out there does know the reason, please enlighten me because it is so bizarre! I honestly do not mind all the songs in the album except for “Mujhe Pyar Ka Tohfa Deke”. I just think Usha Khanna’s voice did nothing for the song and therefore I can’t bring myself to like the song aesthetically or intrinsically. My favourites from this album are “Meri Dooron Se Aayee Baraat”, “Jaggaya Jaggaya” and “Dhoom Mache Dhoom”.

Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, M - Dhoom Mache Dhoom - www.Songs. .mp3
Found at bee mp3 search engine

Note: If you haven’t already noticed, I am very partial to Mahendra Kapoor’s and Shailendra Singh’s voices. I believe that these singers have both been severally under-rated when it comes to their voices abilities.

My verdict: Three star plus.

Kaala Patthar 1979: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Ek Rasta Hai Zindagi – Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Chorus

2. Meri Dooron Se Aayee Baraat – Lata Mangeshkar and Chorus

3. Jaggaya Jaggaya – Mahendra Kapoor, S.K. Mahan and Pamela Chopra

Side Two

1. Dhoom Mache Dhoom – Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor and S.K. Mahan and Chorus

2. Bahoon Mein Teri – Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi

3. Mujhe Pyar Ka Tohfa Deke – Usha Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi

MUSIC #26: ELVIS PRESLEY – CRYING IN THE CHAPEL 1960 (ENGLISH EP)

This is one of my favourite Elvis Presley songs and imagine my surprise when I found out that it wasn’t his original song, rather a song written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell Glenn in 1953. Elvis recorded this song in 1960, as part of his gospel album, “His Hand In Mine” but RCA (his recording company then) chose not to include it in the album, but rather as an “Easter Special” single five years later in 1965. Although released in 1965, the record credits it as a 1960 recording.

The single hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the easy listening chart for six months in 1965, making it Presley’s greatest chart success in a six-year period. The single also reached number one on the UK charts for two weeks.

This song was also included as a bonus track on Presley's 1967 gospel album, “How Great Thou Art” and the 2002 Elvis CD, “30 #1 Hits album”.

Trivia: Other singers that have recorded this song include June Vallie, The Orioles, Rex Allen, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Lund and the Allies (a Christian band of the late 1980’s).

My verdict: 4 stars

MUSIC #25: CHALTE CHALTE 1976 (HINDI OST)

I know I watched this movie with my parents and young aunties (both my paternal and maternal aunts were staying with us for a few months then) at the Main Road cinema in Kuantan (Malaysia) and that both my aunts were pretty taken with the songs of the movie. Mind you, at this time, records were no longer the craze but rather those bulky 8 track tape cartridges (see picture below) and I can remember that both my aunts gave the tape deck quite a thumping. Who could blame them? Although I can’t for the life of me remember the movie (as I have not seen it again since that trip to the cinema), I will however, always remember the songs. It is just phenomenal.

The music of Chalte Chalte (While Walking/While On The Journey) is by Bappi Lahiri and the lyrics are by Amit Khanna. This is one of Lahiri’s few ‘typical’ or ‘traditional’ Bollywood albums before venturing into his trademark ‘Bollywood Disco’ music. In addition, he also sang in this album, along with the legendary actor/singer Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh (I love his voice!) and actress/singer Sulakshana Pandit. Still glowing from the success of the movie Zakhmee (1975), the songs of Chalte Chalte became the rage of 1976 and further cemented Bappi Lahiri as an aspiring Hindi composer and later as a legend in his own right.

My verdict: Five stars…..and my favourites - I love them all! Okay maybe ‘Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi’ more than the others.

Chalte Chalte 1976: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Chalte Chalte (Part I) – Kishore Kumar

2. Dur Dur – Lata Mangeshkar

3. Jana Kahan Hai – Sulakshana Pandit and Bappi Lahiri

Side Two

1. Sapnon Ka Raja – Sulakshana Pandit and Shailendra Singh

2. Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi – Shailendra Singh and Lata Mangeshkar

3. Chalte Chalte (Part II) – Kishore Kumar

MUSIC #23: ROTI 1974 (HINDI OST)

Roti (Bread) was a blockbuster hit OST and movie by director Manmohan Desai, with his super star of choice then, Rajesh Khanna, in the lead role and the lovely Mumtaz playing his heroine. The combination of the charismatic lead actors, tantalising music by duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi all contributed to Roti’s iconic status.

As the movie tells the story of petty criminal (with a moral conscious, of course) Mangal Singh (played by Rajesh Khanna) who steals because of hunger, most of the songs in the movie has a social message and depicts the era in Indian history of rising inflation and severe food rationing.

Singers Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar lent their voices to all the songs in this movie and the song ‘Yeh Public Hai’ and ‘Yaar Humari Baat Suno’ further entrenched Kishore Kumar’s legendary status as a singer. But the song that will always be remembered as THE song from Roti, and a hit in its own right till today is ‘Gore Rang Pe Itna Gumaan Na Kar’ (see YouTube clip below). A must hear album for all Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kishore Kumar fans. My verdict: 4 star plus.

NB: QC (quality control) at the Polydor Studios was definitely having an ‘off’ day as none of the songs and dialogues are labelled correctly, on the record and on the back cover. I have therefore split some of the music and most importantly, the dialogues from the songs, only in instances where there is no sync between the dialogue and song. Where a dialogue follows through in a song, it is correctly synced.

ROTI 1974: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Intro music
2. Yeh Public Hai – Kishore Kumar
3. Gore Rang Pe Itna Gumaan Na Kar – Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar
4. Yaar Humari Baat Suno – Kishore Kumar

4. Phoolon Ke Saath – Lata Mangeshkar
5. Dialogue – (Khadak Singh) Drinking Milk

7. Dialogue - Mangal Is Dying

MUSIC #22: BRAHMACHARI 1968 (HINDI OST)

Brahmachari the movie was a box-office hit in 1968 and was nominated for eight Filmfare awards and won five of its nominations – Best Movie, Best Actor (Shammi Kapoor), Best Male Playback Singer (Mohammad Rafi for “Dilke Jharoke Mein"), Best Lyricist (Shailendra for "Main Gaon Tum") and Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan). The movie also won the 1969 Bengal Film Journalists' Association (the oldest film critic association in India, founded in 1937) awards (hindi section) for Best Supporting Actress (Mumtaz), Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan) and Best Editor (M.S.Shinde).

As mentioned above, the music for this soundtrack is by the talented Shankar-Jaikishan duo and the lyrics are from three different writers – Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri and Rajinder Krishan. All the songs are sung by the legendary Mohammad Rafi and only one song, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke”, is a duet. I have a soft spot for the music of this album, especially “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” as I choreographed and danced to this song for a Vesaikhi show back in the late 1980’s (see picture below). Also, actress Mumtaz made the watch look like a very sexy accessory in the song clip. Not only that, Shammi Kapoor, along with his brother Shashi Kapoor, are some of my favourite actors from that era. For a write-up of the movie, check out Memsaab Story.

My favourites from this album include “Main Gaon Tum So Jao”, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” and “Dil Ke Jharoke Men”. My verdict: 4 stars.

Brahmachari 1968: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Main Gaon Tum So Jao (Happy) – Mohd Rafi

2. Chhakke Men Chhakka – Mohd Rafi and Chorus
Lyrics: Shailendra

3. Mohabat Ke Khuda – Mohd Rafi and Chorus
Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

Note:

Brahmachari, from the word Brahmacharya, which is a period of (Hindu) spiritualism that one partakes, in which sexual abstinence is undertaken. A Brahmachari is the male term of Brahmacharya and brahmacharini is the female term. Unlike the practices of nuns and priest in Catholism where celibacy is required until death (or until one renounces his or her wows to God), the period for Brahmacharya may be ceased and never to be continued, or may be continued at a later time.

MUSIC #21: JIVE BUNNY AND THE MASTER MIXERS – THAT’S WHAT I LIKE EP 1989 (ENGLISH)

Imagine my surprise when I was fossicking through my local Salvation Army store (I love those shops….the things you find there!) when I came across this EP from Jive Bunny. Gosh, this was one of the most awesomest (yes, I know it is not a word ….. but I wanted a superlative to describe this album and this is the closest I could find) songs during my teenage years and the most requested song on the radio and discotheques. To think that I managed to get it for 50 cents Australian. Bargain! How many stars then? Five, of course!

Unfortunately, it is only an EP so until I can find the full album, enjoy this rather short posting and music.

Till next time, Ciao.

MUTTERINGS #10: ALWAYS LIE ABOUT YOUR AGE

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word.

His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?'

Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!' They are knocked over, but continue to ask. 'So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?' 'I lied about my age', Bob replies. 'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'

Bob smiles and says, 'No, I told her I was 90.'

PS: On that note, I am only 21! LOL....I wish.
