MUSIC #26: ELVIS PRESLEY – CRYING IN THE CHAPEL 1960 (ENGLISH EP)

This is one of my favourite Elvis Presley songs and imagine my surprise when I found out that it wasn’t his original song, rather a song written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell Glenn in 1953. Elvis recorded this song in 1960, as part of his gospel album, “His Hand In Mine” but RCA (his recording company then) chose not to include it in the album, but rather as an “Easter Special” single five years later in 1965. Although released in 1965, the record credits it as a 1960 recording.

The single hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the easy listening chart for six months in 1965, making it Presley’s greatest chart success in a six-year period. The single also reached number one on the UK charts for two weeks.

This song was also included as a bonus track on Presley's 1967 gospel album, “How Great Thou Art” and the 2002 Elvis CD, “30 #1 Hits album”.

Trivia: Other singers that have recorded this song include June Vallie, The Orioles, Rex Allen, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Lund and the Allies (a Christian band of the late 1980’s).

My verdict: 4 stars
