Kaala Patthar (Black Stone or Coal, in this instance) is an action/drama film produced and directed by Bollywood heavyweight Yash Chopra. The movie is based on the Chasnala mining disaster in 1975 where an explosion in the Indian mine led to the mine flooding, killing 372 miners in the catastrophe.
The movie however did average at the box office throughout India; it was the urban numbers that kept the movie from becoming a box office flop. Despite eight Filmfare nominations, it failed to win a single award.
The music however fared rather well with the masses. The scores are by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Sahir. The first song of the album, “Ek Raasta Hai Zindagi” opens with the first line of the famous Dolly Parton song, “Jolene” but this is where the similarity ends. No idea why Rajesh Roshan inserted that into the opening score; if anyone out there does know the reason, please enlighten me because it is so bizarre! I honestly do not mind all the songs in the album except for “Mujhe Pyar Ka Tohfa Deke”. I just think Usha Khanna’s voice did nothing for the song and therefore I can’t bring myself to like the song aesthetically or intrinsically. My favourites from this album are “Meri Dooron Se Aayee Baraat”, “Jaggaya Jaggaya” and “Dhoom Mache Dhoom”.

Note: If you haven’t already noticed, I am very partial to Mahendra Kapoor’s and Shailendra Singh’s voices. I believe that these singers have both been severally under-rated when it comes to their voices abilities.
My verdict: Three star plus.
Kaala Patthar 1979: The Original Soundtrack
Side One
1. Ek Rasta Hai Zindagi – Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Chorus
2. Meri Dooron Se Aayee Baraat – Lata Mangeshkar and Chorus
3. Jaggaya Jaggaya – Mahendra Kapoor, S.K. Mahan and Pamela Chopra
Side Two
1. Dhoom Mache Dhoom – Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor and S.K. Mahan and Chorus
2. Bahoon Mein Teri – Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi
3. Mujhe Pyar Ka Tohfa Deke – Usha Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi
I haven't seen the movie but those were the days when we used to get audio-casettes with complete film dialogues. This trend became very popular after Sholay (1975). So I used to hear those dialogues. However, I found the sequences interesting. On the one hand, the interface between Rakhee and Amitabh sounded sort of pompous, on the other, I found Parveen-Shashi encounters humourous, witty and natural. The other pair of Shatru and Channo stand out only in their solitary stances, what with Shatru mouthing phrases like "Arthi ke phool" etc.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite song is Baahon me.n teri mastee ke Dere. I find it magnetic, fragrant and intoxicating, heightened by the romantic presence of gorgeous Parveen Babi.
Thanks, Veen. Love Dhoom Mache Dhoom...just listened a couple of times to it...great beat and powerhouse vocal by Lata. :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for this album. I seem to have a weird type of problem with the song "ik rasta hai zindagi" -- Kishore's voice and the Chorus is hardly audible, but Lata's voice is crystal clear...are other people also facing the same problem?? If so, would you please re-upload this song?? Perhaps this track might need to be re-ripped. Thanks for all your effort.
Thanks Veen.
ReplyDeleteThis is a stereophonic recording which was just catching up in India in the late 70s. I think there's some problem with the Left channel rip of Ek Raasta Hai... The Right channel sounds OK through which you get Lata's part of the song. Kishore's voice must have been recorded on the Left channel which is mute. Overall, his voice sounds very feeble giving the feeling of listening to a Karaoke version.
Did not try the other nos.
On the whole, a very good album with high quality recording.

Amazing Mr Nasir...instead of audio books, you had audio films. What a novel idea.
ReplyDeleteParveen Babi: One of the most undervalued and underestimated divas in Bollywood.
You are welcome Mr Naidu. Hope you enjoy the rest of the album.
Anon. and Babu, thanks for pointing out the flaw. Unfortunately, it has something to do with the recording. It is perfectly clear on the record player and my speakers, but just the first song, it would not 'translate' Kishore's voice. I'll rejig the song and reload the whole album ASAP. There may be some volume distortion, unfortunately.
Veen
Hi to all....flaw rectified and album reloaded on front page.
ReplyDeleteVeen.
Thanks once again Veen, for taking the trouble of re-uploading. Sounds great now.
