To kick off this week, I thought I'd post this awesome instrumental sitar album by Ananda Shankar. A fusion between Western Rock, Raagas and Indian sitar music - psychedelic!

My rating: Pure 5 star enjoyment.

MUSIC #23: ROTI 1974 (HINDI OST)

Roti (Bread) was a blockbuster hit OST and movie by director Manmohan Desai, with his super star of choice then, Rajesh Khanna, in the lead role and the lovely Mumtaz playing his heroine. The combination of the charismatic lead actors, tantalising music by duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi all contributed to Roti’s iconic status.

As the movie tells the story of petty criminal (with a moral conscious, of course) Mangal Singh (played by Rajesh Khanna) who steals because of hunger, most of the songs in the movie has a social message and depicts the era in Indian history of rising inflation and severe food rationing.

Singers Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar lent their voices to all the songs in this movie and the song ‘Yeh Public Hai’ and ‘Yaar Humari Baat Suno’ further entrenched Kishore Kumar’s legendary status as a singer. But the song that will always be remembered as THE song from Roti, and a hit in its own right till today is ‘Gore Rang Pe Itna Gumaan Na Kar’ (see YouTube clip below). A must hear album for all Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kishore Kumar fans. My verdict: 4 star plus.

NB: QC (quality control) at the Polydor Studios was definitely having an ‘off’ day as none of the songs and dialogues are labelled correctly, on the record and on the back cover. I have therefore split some of the music and most importantly, the dialogues from the songs, only in instances where there is no sync between the dialogue and song. Where a dialogue follows through in a song, it is correctly synced.

MUSIC #22: BRAHMACHARI 1968 (HINDI OST)

Brahmachari the movie was a box-office hit in 1968 and was nominated for eight Filmfare awards and won five of its nominations – Best Movie, Best Actor (Shammi Kapoor), Best Male Playback Singer (Mohammad Rafi for “Dilke Jharoke Mein"), Best Lyricist (Shailendra for "Main Gaon Tum") and Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan). The movie also won the 1969 Bengal Film Journalists' Association (the oldest film critic association in India, founded in 1937) awards (hindi section) for Best Supporting Actress (Mumtaz), Best Music Director (Shankar-Jaikishan) and Best Editor (M.S.Shinde).

As mentioned above, the music for this soundtrack is by the talented Shankar-Jaikishan duo and the lyrics are from three different writers – Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri and Rajinder Krishan. All the songs are sung by the legendary Mohammad Rafi and only one song, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke”, is a duet. I have a soft spot for the music of this album, especially “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” as I choreographed and danced to this song for a Vesaikhi show back in the late 1980’s (see picture below). Also, actress Mumtaz made the watch look like a very sexy accessory in the song clip. Not only that, Shammi Kapoor, along with his brother Shashi Kapoor, are some of my favourite actors from that era. For a write-up of the movie, check out Memsaab Story.

My favourites from this album include “Main Gaon Tum So Jao”, “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke” and “Dil Ke Jharoke Men”. My verdict: 4 stars.

Note:

Brahmachari, from the word Brahmacharya, which is a period of (Hindu) spiritualism that one partakes, in which sexual abstinence is undertaken. A Brahmachari is the male term of Brahmacharya and brahmacharini is the female term. Unlike the practices of nuns and priest in Catholism where celibacy is required until death (or until one renounces his or her wows to God), the period for Brahmacharya may be ceased and never to be continued, or may be continued at a later time.

MUSIC #21: JIVE BUNNY AND THE MASTER MIXERS – THAT’S WHAT I LIKE EP 1989 (ENGLISH)

Imagine my surprise when I was fossicking through my local Salvation Army store (I love those shops….the things you find there!) when I came across this EP from Jive Bunny. Gosh, this was one of the most awesomest (yes, I know it is not a word ….. but I wanted a superlative to describe this album and this is the closest I could find) songs during my teenage years and the most requested song on the radio and discotheques. To think that I managed to get it for 50 cents Australian. Bargain! How many stars then? Five, of course!

Unfortunately, it is only an EP so until I can find the full album, enjoy this rather short posting and music.

His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?'

Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!' They are knocked over, but continue to ask. 'So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?' 'I lied about my age', Bob replies. 'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'

1. This was Neetu Singh’s first movie appearance (see picture below).

2. The Hindi movie is based on the 1961 Hollywood Disney movie “The Parent Trap” starring Maureen O'Hara, Brian Keith and child star Hayley Mills, about teenage twins and their divorced parents.

3. This 1961 Hollywood movie was remade in 1998 and stars Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson and child star Lindsay Lohan.
