MUSIC #42: JAB JAB PHOOL KHILE 1965 (HINDI OST)

One of my favourite Hindi movies and soundtracks from the mid 60’s with my favourite actor Shashi Kapoor and Nanda in the lead roles. The music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. BTW, "Jab Jab Phool Khile" translates to "When The Flowers Bloom".

I am not going to give a lenghty review here or try to dissect the music in this OST, only because I love all the songs…actually only 7 of the 8 songs, so 87.5 per cent of this album…the one song that I am not that partial to is Affo Khudaya.

My rating: 5 stars.

Jab Jab Phool Khile 1965: The Original Soundtrack

Side One

1. Pardesiyon Se Na Akhiyan Milana – Lata Mangeskar
2. Ek Tha Gul Aur Ek Thi Bulbul – Mohd Rafi and Nanda
3. Affo Khudaya – Mohd Rafi
4. Pardesiyon Se Na Akhiyan Milana (Sad) – Mohd Rafi

Side Two

1. Yeh Samaan Samaan Hai Pyar Ka – Lata Mangeshkar
2. Yahaan Main Ajnabi Hoon – Mohd Rafi
3. Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhi Se – Mohd Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur
4. Pardesiyon Se Na Akhiyan Milana (Happy) – Mohd Rafi

PS: I am told by my friend Babu that Laxmikant-Pyarelal assisted in the making of the OST!

  1. Great selection Veen. Who doesn't know about the songs of JJPK!
My most favourite song among all the favourites is YAHAAN MAIN AJNABI HOON. One of the earliest of the Rap songs was Affu Khudaayaa. It's a crowd puller even now on stage shows.
JJPK was a super-hit movies. It was this movie that really launched Shashi Kapoor as an actor and heart-throb to reckon with so that he survived the 'Phenomenon' Rajesh Khanna wave. The Album deserves the 5-star rating.

Politically, from this movie we learn how peaceful was Kashmir in the past.

  2. Thanks Veen. Yes, its a great album and for some reason I too don't like Affu Khuda much.

I think this story was modified and made as Raja Hindustani with Aamir and Karishma. Another super hit. There's even a song starting with the word Pardesi. Don't know if the situation is similar.

By the way, can you guess the Assistant Music Director(s) for this movie? Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This must have been recorded just before Parasmani.

    Warm Regds / Babu

  3. Nasir Saab, firstly let me wish you and your family, Eid Fitr Mubarak. Hope you have a lovely time with your family and friends on this festive occassion.

This album was one of my father's favourite so I grew up with it and have always enjoyed it. And speaking from a woman's perspective, yes, Shashi truly was a heart-throb and as you said, he survived the Rajesh Khanna phenomenon, continuing with hits such as Aa Gale Lag Jaa and then surviving the next wave of heart-throbs as in his own nephew Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachan and Vinod Khanna. Movies such as Shaan and Kabhi2 come to mind.

Yes, to think that India has its own paradise....with the beautiful Dal Lake, snow capped mountains, beautiful scenaries....but can't capitalise on its own shurg because of conflict. I truly feel sad for your country.

  4. Hi five Babu, for having the same taste! I know it is (Affo Khudaya) a popular song but it's just too much for me. I can't really explain why.

Now that you mentioned it, yes, there is some similarities with Raja Hindustani!!! Well there you go. And similarly, the song "pardesi pardesi jana nahin" is my favourite from that movie too...although it is way more raunchy than the Nanda version in JJPK, of couse :O

Ohhhh, were L-P indeed the assistant music directors? It's no wonder then that the album is a masterpiece....With the talent of FOUR great composers rolled into one album!!!

  5. Speaking of Raja Hindustani song, PARDESI PARDESI JAANA NAHIN....please check out the Jaane-Anjaane (1971) song: TERI NEELI NEELI ANKHON KE...There the stanzas tune is the same as the Mukhda of Raja Hindustani number. E.g. The stanza beginning SOONA THAAH SANSAAR HAMAARA TUUNE AAN BASAAYAA...and so on.

  7. You are right Nasirji, it is too. Well picked. Thanks for that.

On the subject of Eid, in Malaysia, there is this concept of 'open' house where all friends will visit each other to eat and drink during each owns festive season (such as Christmas, Diwali, Vesaikhi, Chinese New Year and both Eids). Does this happen in India too???

  8. In the cities it is very common to host "Iftar" parties in the evening during the Ramadan (fasting month). These parties include all communities and is hosted by the neighbours who give invitations. At the highest level too such as is done by even the Prime Minister. Naturally, there is always a hidden political agenda. In the Masjid, usually poor people visit and there's lot of stuff to eat there.

As far as Eid is concerned, after the morning and Eid prayers, sweet Seviyaan are distributed. Even food may be distributed. Gathering of friends takes place in the evening or the next day. The bottom line is, it depends on the person, his tastes and friends as well as the location, as to how the Eid is celebrated.

  12. Thanks, Veen. Kalyanji-Anandji made some great music in their career...and Laxmikant-Pyarelal assisted on this? That's a lot of musical firepower. :)

  13. Indeed Mr N...a lot of firepower. That's why it is a great album.
