MUSIC #95: LOOTERA 1965 (HINDI OST)

Today's offering is Lootera, a 1965 soundtrack from Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi (except for Raat Se Kaho Ruke Zara' which is by Asad Bhopali). This is a request from Gabrujat.

I have to admit I cannot remember listening to any of these songs as a child and the only reason I have this record is because it was on a list of freebies to choose from my record purchases. But having said this, I really do not mind the songs and they do keep in the tradition of the songs during the arly and mid 60s. I guess one has to hear them a few times to truly appreciate the songs. I let you be the judge of it. I give this soundtrack 3.5 stars.

MUTTERINGS #69: LATEST EP ACQUISITIONS AND VINYL COLLECTION

These arrived in the mail today. Can't wait to listen and rip them but a bit disappointed I can't seem to find the titles in LPs. Does anyone know if these were produced in LPs or better still have them and could share the rips? Do let me know.

This is my collection thus far, with another 200 hundred yet to be alphabetised and slotted onto the shelves and over 3000 records yet to be catalogued. I can't wait to retire and get stuck into ripping all my vinyls but unfortunately I have over 20 more years to go. Unless I win lottery....woo who. Wouldn't that be lovely????

MUSIC #92: CHORI CHORI 1956 (HINDI OST)

Chori Chori (Secretly), released in 1956, was directed by Anant Thakur and stared the great combo of the era, Raj Kapoor and Nargis Dutt. The movie is said to be inspired by the Hollywood movie “It Happened One Night” and would later inspire another Bollywood movie,” Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin” which starred Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt.

The music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan (SJ), who won the Filmfare Best Music Director for the soundtrack. The lyrics were a joint effort between lyricists Harat jaipuri and Shailendra, both achieving hits with their songs Aaja Sanam and Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi, respectively (which happens to be my favourite too). In my opinion, SJ’s decision to have Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar sing most of the mellow tracks in the movie was an excellent choice. Manna Dey just brought the music and the lyrics to life. The more upbeat tunes from the movie were sung by Mohammad Rafi.

MUSIC #91: PREVIN PLAYS GERSHWIN 1973 (CLASSICAL BROADWAY)

If you like the music of Andre Previn and George Gershwin, here’s a rare treat. Two great maestros in one offering. Together with the London Symphony Orchestro and Previn conducting the music and on the piano, he brings George Gershwin’s wonderful music to life.

 My verdict: 4 stars

 A note on George Gershwin:

An American composer and pianist born on 26 September 1898 and died on 11 July 1937 aged only 38, from a barin tumour. He composed pop and classical music, usually with his brother Ira Gershwin, and is most famous for Rhapsody In Blue (1924), An American In Paris (1928) and Porgy and Bess (1935). For more information on Gershwin, click HERE.

A Note on Andre Previn:

Andre Previn is a German-American pianist, conductor and composer. He has won four Academy Awards for his film work and ten Grammy Awards for his recordings. Some of his well known works include Gigi, My Fair lady and Irma la Douce. Click HERE to learn more about Previn.

MUTTERINGS #68: ROTFL1

GENERAL EQUATIONS & STATISTICS

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.

A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.

A successful woman is one who can find such a man...

DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE

A woman has the last word in any argument.

Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

HOW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM BUGGING YOU ABOUT GETTING MARRIED

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next."

They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

MUSIC #90: DHARKAN 1972 (Hindi EP OST)

Yes it’s been a long time.......but.......Don’t get too excited. I am not sure if I will be doing this routinely or if this is just one of my whims but I do know that I have to convert my vinyl music collection to mp3 only because I miss listening to my music when and where I want to. So let’s play it by ear, and I hope you enjoy my “comeback” selection.

Today’s offering is Dharkan (Heart Beat) from composer Ravi, who also wrote or co-wrote most of the lyrics, along with lyricist Prem Dhawan and Ali Jalili. I cannot tell you anything about the movie because I truly cannot remember watching this as a kid as I would have been only 4 at that time. Curious enough, the first Hindi movie I could remember watching is Kati Patang. Anyway, according to the divine Miss G of Memsaab Story (see review HERE), it is obviously no lost as the storyline is a shocker and the only saving grace are the songs. And I wholeheartedly concur. From the bop-py tune of Main to Chala, to the sultry and seductress voice of Asha Bhosle in Jab Tu Neh Kuchh Na Kiya, there is something here to suit everyone. Enjoy.
My verdict – 4 stars

Side A

1.       Main To Chala – Kishore Kumar

2.       Jab Tu Ne Kuchh Na Kiya – Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey and Chorus

Side B

1.       Mere Dost Tujhe – Mohd Rafi

2.       Soja Mere Lal – Lata Mangeshkar
